Those clever folk at Deep Local have built a concept bike that lets you shift gears with your mind for Toyota Prius. While undeniably futuristic, it was built using readily accessible technology and components. Apparently with 10 minutes of training you can be smoothly shifting the gears of this beautiful Parlee Cycles one off design with nothing by the power of thought. Berlin based generative design studio onformative has an impressive body of work. The solution they came up with for their most recent project for Actelion, a biopharmacuetical company, is elegant and impressive. They developed a custom Processing application that generates still and animated brand imagery for Actelion. What a fantastic approach to producing a cohesive brand identity.

Doing something worth talking about: The KFC Double Down

Last week saw KFC’s legendary bunless belly builder, the Double Down, reach New Zealand shores. Media commentators are describing it as a triumph of marketing, variously attributing it to an excellent public relations campign, social media campaign, or even suggesting there may have been some dodgy paid promotional shill type activity.

What I think they have failed to realise is that ultimately this is a marketing triumph because KFC had the balls to do something that was worth talking about.

People were always going to talk about a fatty, calorific, and possibly extremely delicious (depending who you talk to) burger. Not just a burger though, a burger unlike any you can get from any other fast food outlet. KFC New Zealand knew that by bringing it they would polarise portions of the New Zealand population. On one side you would have people crying foul at them pedaling a “heart attack in a box”, and on the other legions of adoring fans defending their right to eat anything they deem delicious.

Whether you think that the Double Down is a artery-clogging abomination or the pinnacle of protein provision, you have to admit that what KFC did well was to create a product that was worth talking about. On national news, on facebook, and around the water cooler. It truly is a remarkable piece of food.

This is what your marketing department should be thinking about. Not just your catchy new slogan, clever TV ad, or discount promotion, but how you can make your product or service something that is worth talking about. If they can do that you don’t need to worry so much about your advertising budget.

(For the record, I have yet to try one.)

This is a bumper edition of the guide to the Interneat to celebrate version 3.0 being resuscitated. Enjoy!

I am loving some of the gems that Letters of Note uncovers. The presidents address that would have been delivered by Richard Nixon in the event of the Apollo 11 mission being a disaster is fascinating (as is some of the discussion about the note itself).
Wicked little spot for Smart from those clever clogs at Buck. Love the style of this one.
The work of illustrator Ryan Snook is fantastic. I am particularly digging this ‘whale driver’.
Scottish trials mega freak Danny MacAskill has a new short flick, Way Back Home, shot beautifully in his home country. Danny does stuff that almost no one else in the world can on a bike. Red Bull sure know how to do sponsorship and branded content right.
Forget Avatar. The best use of 3D so far: 3DD - a book of three dimensional boobs. Probably not safe for work if your boss doesn’t like boobs. It’s art, ok.
An exhibition of incredible wallpaper that is made up of three different patterns in red, yellow & blue from Carnovsky. You can view the patterns individually by viewing through a filter.

All round smart/creative/talented dude Evan Roth has created the Public Domain Donor system. Donate your ideas to the public domain on your death so that they may live on. Just print one out and stick it on your license.
My favourite infographic designer Nicholas Feltron whipped up this awesome caffeine monitor dashboard for the Build Conference.
The Underbelly project is an exhibition of street art from 103 artists that was 18 months in the making. Even more interestingly it was held in an abandoned part of the New York underground transport network. Would love to check it out for myself.

Rip Curl has put together this awesome ‘bullet time’ footage of four of the worlds best surfers in the Sunway Lagoon Wavepool in Malaysia. No less than 52 cameras were used to capture this killer action.
More surfing action, but this one isn’t so much revolutionary as just plain stunning. If you like hearing from people who are totally devoted to something then ‘Dark Side of the Lens’ is for you.

This generative logo for Norwegian city Nordkyn is some of the most interesting identity work I have seen in a long time. The shape and colour of the logo is determined by the current weather conditions. Apparently it is inspired by the snowflake, which is obviously a fairly prominent feature of Nordkyn life. Full details of how it works are over on Brand New.
If you are a music & web geek like me you should definitely check out Seaquence, an ‘experimental musical petri-dish’. Hours of fun. (via Charles Coxhead)

Choi + Shine Architects recently picked up the Boston Society of Architects award for this project re-imagining high voltage pylons. Unfortunately the Icelandic folk who were running the competition in which they were entered didn’t like them enough to run out and build them. I would love to see these carrying the national grid here in NZ, imagine these set against the rugged central plateau landscape.

This multi-touch DJ interface, a senior degree project from Greg Werk, looks pretty neat. Think he may be overstating the problem a little (given any club worth its salt has gear already – never have I seen a DJ have to do a full gear set up while another plays), but still nice to see people pushing the boundaries a little.

The Yes Men have released a special peer to peer edition of their latest film ‘The Yes Men Fix the World’. It includes a deleted scene from the full release (something about them being sued over it). Download it and flick them some cash to help them out with their next crazy project, it will be money well spent.
Watching this video of Paul Basagoitia ripping his back yard as we tripped around Canada got me pretty pumped up (and also wondering how feasible it would be for me to buy a house with a good chunk of land attached). Also of interest, Trent Palmer shot this using a Canon 7D mounted on a radio control helicopter. How cool is that!
More New Math provides a vast array of life lessons by way of equation.
Pilot Magazine is without doubt the hottest print publication here in NZ right now. They also run a great little blog that is worth keeping an eye on in between the visual feast that is each of their issues (if you can, get hold of a copy of their latest issue). Apparently it is temporary and a ‘real’ site is coming… If that is the case then I can’t wait to see what they have in store.
How to Write an Advertising Manifesto (aka The Manifesto Manifesto) is an outstandingly astute and witty observation from Kim Mok.

I have to admit though, I do still really want to write a manifesto at some point. The point at which I feel strongly enough about something to write a manifesto about it. Just the word manifesto gets me all fired up. (via Fishing for bats)

Diesel’s new ‘Be Stupid’ campaign includes some of the freshest work I have seen in a while. Up until now the stuff I have seen has mainly been clever copy & killer photography, but they took it experiential with Diesel Facepark, Facebook in the real world. Why? Apparently digital is smart and analogue is stupid, and Diesel says be stupid.

The Big Caption is a complement to (Boston.com’s always amazing) The Big Picture, wherein jokes and statements are made using typography. For example:

While we are on the subject of typography, Typography for Lawyers looks like a great practical guide for non-desingny folk who want to make their long written documents look swish.
Some great desktop wallpaper for bike lovers like me from Jennifer Daniel.
The Radio 1 Essential Mix is an institution. Over time they have basically hosted every major DJ there has ever been. Now you can listen to and rate (almost) every Essential Mix since 1993 online, anytime at essentialmixes.net. An amazing archive of recent electronic music history. Great for folks like me out in the colonies.
Diplo & Switch (aka Major Lazer) team up with La Roux to deliver the massive (free!) Lazerproof mixtape. It is a pretty crazy experiment, as you would expect, and well worth a listen.
Nike (& Weiden+Kennedy London) brilliantly illustrate that if you make amazing, remarkable content then there is no need to buy any media (even though I am sure there is a large accompanying media buy for this one content, you know, just to make sure). This content was run in the seperate vignettes over 3 consecutive nights in the sports news segment of our national television news here in New Zealand (I am sure we weren’t the only country), as well as clocking up untold views across the web. Powerful stuff. (Of course it helps if you have a budget of 5 trillion dollars to produce said content).
A couple of tumblr’s I stumbled across to keep you amused: Micheal Buble being stalked by a Veliciraptor & White People Throwing Gang Signs. Hours of entertainment. Word.
Came across a couple of great recruitment ideas recently. Check out ‘Comic Sans Destroyer‘ for a great little recruitment campaign for agency Happiness Brussels (who wouldn’t want to work at a place called Happiness?!).
And for some creative job seeking you can’t really go past Alec Brownstein’s fantastically clever Google Job Experiment. Kudos also to the creative directors who weren’t too embarrassed to get in touch and try to hire this guy.
Need a great example of a brand building an immersive experience? How about the Pantone Hotel? It is part fo their new ‘Pantone Universe’, a collection of “colourful, design driven” products from the world authority on colour communication. Not sure about the Universe, but the Hotel looks pretty awesome.

I am mildly obsessed with Kingswood Skis right now. Handmade in Lyttleton (a tiny little seaside village here in New Zealand), they look incredible. I am definitely lusting after a pair. Check out this great video of the ski making process from start to finish:

Over the years the poor innocent asterisk has become the reluctant workhorse of every lazy marketer in the world. Instead of directing the reader toward a simple explanatory footnote it has, and continues to be used and abused as a weapon of mass deception.

If your offer or headline could be reasonably misconstrued by a regular person then you need to rethink what or how you are advertising. Particularly if you have added your footnote in 12 point font on the bottom of your spectacular size billboard.

Using asterisks is like dressing your brand in a trench coat; it makes you look dodgy, and makes us wonder what you are hiding.

*Seriously, stop it.

Beautiful & unique installation in the center of Paris highlighting the dangers of unsafe drinking water.
Bad boy DJ/producer Diplo has written a pretty entertaining account of his recent trip to Cuba. It has rekindled my interest in visiting.
Tyler Thompson got sick of looking at ugly, confusing boarding passes, so he had a go at redesigning them. He also put the call out for others to do the same. The results are excellent, hopefully the airlines are listening (although our own Air New Zealand actually does a reasonable job in comparison to the Delta one that Tyler started with)

It is also well worth checking out Dustin Curtis’s well thought out redesign of the American Airlines homepage that was part inspiration for Tyler’s efforts.
Nike has been doing some awesome stuff lately, including this spot for the Nike Free running shoes. Japanese DJ duo Hifana create some wicked beats using the super flexible sneakers. Super cool concept really well excecuted.
