As a kid I always wanted to play (unfortunately we had no ice in Tauranga, New Zealand where I grew up), so watched a few of the Stanley Cup finals series and have a grasp of the rules. Luckily this means that I can now hold a conversation in the bar on game night here in Vancouver, where apparently everyone is a hockey fan.

These videos pair his voice with compelling images and stirring music. I am delighted to see his thoughts being shared with a wider audience.

GoPro make some really cool, inexpensive little HD video cameras that are great for action sports. If you get a whole bunch of them together you can do some pretty incredible stuff:
This beautifully edited short film about base jumping features incredible scenery from the incredible jump spots they use around Europe.
Anyone who has been keeping up with the changes at Facebook will no doubt have heard about the influence and input of Nicholas Felton (aka Feltron). Apparently while he wasn’t busy helping out with completely re-imagining the Facebook profile he has been helping one of his relatives, an Australian winemaker, with some unique, beautiful, and fascinating labels. The labels are data driven, displaying data about the process behind making that particular vintage. Things like heat of fermentation, the time the skin is left of the grapes, and the ripeness of the grapes. These are all things that contribute to the final complex flavour of the wine.
You can read more of the story behind them, and check out the labels in more detail on the Between Five Bells site.

Berlin based generative design studio onformative has an impressive body of work. The solution they came up with for their most recent project for Actelion, a biopharmacuetical company, is elegant and impressive. They developed a custom Processing application that generates still and animated brand imagery for Actelion. What a fantastic approach to producing a cohesive brand identity.

The crew at Dentsu London have done this incredible work for Canon photographing paint sitting on a membrane that has been ‘activated’ by music. The results (both still & video) are stunning.
Rip Curl has put together this awesome ‘bullet time’ footage of four of the worlds best surfers in the Sunway Lagoon Wavepool in Malaysia. No less than 52 cameras were used to capture this killer action.

This generative logo for Norwegian city Nordkyn is some of the most interesting identity work I have seen in a long time.
Choi + Shine Architects recently picked up the Boston Society of Architects award for this project re-imagining high voltage pylons. Unfortunately the Icelandic folk who were running the competition in which they were entered didn’t like them enough to run out and build them. I would love to see these carrying the national grid here in NZ, imagine these set against the rugged central plateau landscape.

This multi-touch DJ interface, a senior degree project from Greg Werk, looks pretty neat. Think he may be overstating the problem a little (given any club worth its salt has gear already – never have I seen a DJ have to do a full gear set up while another plays), but still nice to see people pushing the boundaries a little.

This week saw the teaser for the highly anticipated Life Cycles hit the web. Billed as a whole new kind of mountain bike film (not a bike movie, a movie about a bike – big difference apparently), this trailer certainly makes is look like they are going to deliver on the hype. Ignore the slightly odd choice of still frame below (flames make it look like one of the Kranked series circa 2002, but the rest of the trailer is nothing like that) and give the teaser a hoon in full screen glory.

The team at Spoke Magazine are going to be hosting the NZ premier sometime soon. This looks like it is going to be one to check out whether you ride or not.

You can also whet your appetite with a few other other little teaser shots from the film over at the Life Cycles site.
