Auckland from Mt Eden

Auckland takes a lot of shit in New Zealand, largely from those that don’t live in Auckland, but also surprisingly often from those who do. It is easy to jump on the JAFA-bashing bandwagon, and forget that there are some really awesome things about Auckland, things that I love. I am not suggesting that Auckland is perfect, or even really good, just that there are some things that deserve some love.

So I have decided to start writing about them as I go along in a series of posts. It is so easy to ignore these things, or take them for granted as you go about your daily life in New Zealand’s biggest city.

Good on you Auckland, you’re all right after all.

For people who are not in the know when it comes to Auckland or New Zealand (my bad) can you explain why it gets a bad rap?

@Sloane: sure no problem. I suspect the answer is mostly just because it is the largest city in New Zealand by quite a significant margin, and is also economic capital (despite not being the capital city).

To be fair, there are a lot of things wrong with Auckland: the traffic, the weather (most of the time), the lack of public transport, the massive urban sprawl… but I think it is too easy to pick out the things that suck and complain about them.

I am going to try to balance things out with a little bit of love.
